Market Day Success
Market Day was a huge success! It was so rewarding to see all the hard work from the past five weeks come together. I can’t thank you all enough for making this a meaningful experience for our students. We will take the earnings from yesterday to figure out our profits in the following days based on all of the business expenses. I am so pleased with the way students presented themselves and their thoughtfulness throughout this economics unit! I’m one proud teacher!
Topeka-Field Trip
Wow! We had a fabulous day in Topeka today! First, we went to the State Capitol where we got to take a historical tour. Then went up into the dome, it took some brave souls to trek up all those stairs. The kids were in awe of how beautiful the building was. We congregated on back lawn of the Capitol to take a class picture and finally it was off to Gage to each lunch and play. Here are some pictures of our day =]
Building Bridges
This week we continued our Forces and Motion Unit in Science. Student learned how force is an important factor in the construction of bridges. We watched a video that illustrated how real bridges throughout the US were built. Students then used those design ideas to create their own bridges with just paper and four text books. The challenge was to construct a bridge that could hold the largest amount of pennies.
Hopper Poppers
We began our last Science unit of third grade this week! We will be working with forces and motion! The students will love this hands-on unit and will be spending a significant amount of time building things according to their new found knowledge of different forces that act on objects. Yesterday we made “hopper poppers” made out of cardboard and rubber bands. We discussed the logistics of how force allows the hopper popper to soar up once you release it. Students had a blast building, testing, and modifying their hoppers to see how high they could get them to fly!

Dear Third Grade Parents,
We are preparing for our upcoming economics field trip. We will be going to Vanderbilt’s, Band of the Flint Hills, and Community Health Ministries. The tentative schedule for our field trip is:
Start walking from West at 12:35 – 12:55
1st Rotation: 1:00 – 1:20 (Passing time 1:20 – 1:25)
2nd Rotation: 1:25 – 1:45 (Passing time 1:45 – 1:50)
3rd Rotation : 1:50 – 2:10
Recess/Restroom Break at City Park – 2:15-2:45
Buss Back to school at 2:45
Attire
Please remember to dress appropriately. We will be representing our school. We will be doing a lot of walking, so make sure your child is wearing tennis shoes (no flip flops or sandals). A jacket may also be necessary.

Mini Society Interviews!
Students were all dressed up for Mini-Society interviews today, they all looked quite dashing =] They were a little nervous, but at the same time excited. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to gain experience interviewing for a job. Please remind your child that they all did a wonderful job, and the interviewers had to make VERY tough decisions. The interviewers had outstanding things to say about your children! I am so proud of each and every one of them.

Introduction Letter Mini Society 2017
Please go check out my “Mini Society Project” Tab at the top of my blog to find important information regarding Mini Society job applications and interviews.
You will find the civil servant job descriptions along with the job applications. You will also notice some tips to prepare your child for interview day. I have also attached a rubric in which the interviewer will be scoring your child during interviews. It would be helpful if you used those guidelines when holding mock interviews with your student before interview day (Tuesday, March 28th).

Mini Society Flags and Currency
Parents,
Today is a BIG day for us as we begin our Mini Society unit! Today we will be naming our Society and our currency! Each year we design a flag representing our Society! The Flag will be due on MONDAY, MARCH 27th on their blank sheet of computer paper. Designs need to be hand-made! Students may use crayons, colored pencils, markers, or pencils!
Also, today we are introducing our society currency. ALL CURRENCY DESIGNS WILL BE DUE ON MONDAY, MARCH the 27th! Students will be shown past examples, so they should have a good idea of what we are envisioning. Students should NOT use color because all money will be printed in black and white! We will be doing denominations of 1, 5, 10, 20, 25, 50, 100, and 200 I am attaching some pictures of past examples. If you have any questions please ask!
Students may turn their designs in before Spring Break if they would like. We will be voting on the winning designs the week we come back!
I will have students write the due dates and the name of both our Society and Currency on the backs of each paper after we name them this afternoon! I will also be covering everything you need to know about our mini society unit at parent/teacher conferences next week!
